NEW YORK, May 8 (Reuters) - The St Louis Rams sprang a surprise on Friday by releasing linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa, their leading tackler last season.
"This was a difficult decision based on a lot of factors," head coach Steve Spagnuolo said in a statement. "I have a great deal of respect for Pisa and wish him all the best."
The 27-year-old Tinoisamoa, selected by the Rams in the second round of the 2002 draft, led the team with 135 tackles in 2008.
In 2002 the Hawaiian became the first Rams player to lead the team in tackles as a rookie with 121. He spent much of the 2006 and 2007 campaigns on the reserved/injured list.
